Guest emjay Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 SInce fitting a new stat my V6 runs hotter and the fans cut in very frequently, my investigation has revealed that the original stat was set to open @ 80 degrees, the new one opens @ 86 degrees - this explains the problem but which is correct?. The supplier showed me the book and the replacement stat (86 degrees) is listed as correct so he cannot change it. Does anyone have some knowledge of this. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 ISTR this got mentioned a few weeks back - the Sharan/Gal VR6 uses a different thermostat to the one in other VW cars with the same engine. Try a main dealer  to get the correct one, if all else fails! Do you have a motor factors near you - see if they offer more than one temp setting for a VR6 thermostat. Quote
seatkid Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 A few years back, I bought a replacement thermostat from Halfords for my passat. It opened way too late, same symptoms as yours - excess temp and pressure caused failure of expansion tank! - the moral? Use only genuine parts e.g. dealer or O.E. On top of that the genuine VW part was cheaper!!!  Similar story about my SAAB 99 many years ago - fitted with "Champion" spark plugs - they were the wrong heat range, tip broke off and bent valve/cylinder head damage ensued..and that wasn't the end of the story.   Quote
